Generally, many school will just pay the teacher a housing allowance. Teachers will be responsible for getting their own housing, however, they will support you with an English Speaking Agent to assist you with your apartment search.
What is the housing situation like in China?
If I want to get my own housing, what kind of cost will I incur?
The housing deposit is usually 2 months rent, plus first month rent. There is a agent fee which is usually 50% of the monthly rent. Rent in the major cities vary between 3000 RMB a month to about 6000 RMB. Cities like Shanghai and Beijing will be more expensive while Shenzhen and Guangzhou will be much lower.
Will my flight be reimbursed or prepaid?
Usually, the flights are reimbursed by the school after your arrival. Some employers will reimburse you on your first pay check, while others will reimburse you after you pay probation. Of course job benefits vary, and also flight reimbursement policies vary from job to job. How much cash will I need upon arrival?
Excluding housing deposit and expenses, teachers will generally need to bring about 6000 RMB to get them by until their first pay check. Teachers generally need about 100 RMB per day to pay for daily food costs and transportation.
Is it easy to get phone service in China?
Yes it is- as long as you have an unlocked phone. Make sure you call your phone service provider and ask them to unlock your phone. Once unlocked, you can purchase a SIM card for about 100 RMB, and get good data and voice call for about 80-120 RMB a month.
How long are the annual leave and national holidays?
In China, there are about 11 national holidays. Around early February, there is a 1 week holidays for Chinese New Years, and in beginning of October, there is a 1 week October Holidays. In addition to this, there is annual leave, but that would vary by the type of job you take.
I heard that in China, many schools open on weekends and I have to work Saturdays and Sundays. Is this true?
Yes, for private language training centers, teachers will work on Saturdays and Sundays. They will get 2 consecutive weekdays off. Good news- on weekdays, teachers generally start work at mid afternoon. This allows night owls to enjoy their night life and still make it to work on time.
Why do the salaries vary greatly between some cities?
That’s because the cost of living also vary greatly city by city. For example, average rent for a 50m3 flat will be about 1800 RMB a month in Wuxi, 3000 RMB a month in Guangzhou, while in Beijing can be as high as 8000 RMB a month.
How much money can I expect to save a month?
That depends on your lifestyle. However, teachers usually have a monthly disposable income of 7000 RMB a month after rent, food and transportation expense. This budget can go into your holiday traveling expense, paying off student loans, or put it away in a savings account.
I want to move to China ASAP! How soon can I start working in China?
If you have all of your documents ready, and authenticated by the China Consulate, the visa process is about 22 days. Some recruiters will try to convince you to arrive in China with a business visa, and start working while they process your proper work permit. While chances of getting caught is low, if caught, you will be deported from China.
I am unemployed and my start date is 3 months away. What can I do?

I heard that some teachers are able to teach at an International School without being a certified teacher. How is this possible?
The word “international school” is generally confused with private schools. Private schools operate for Chinese students to study with an English Curriculum. Generally they prefer to hire Certified Teachers, but often hire teachers without the certification. International schools are operate for students with Foreign Passports only. These schools will only hire teachers with Teaching Credentials
