TEFL Certification is the most basic ESL Teaching Certificate that you can get and can be easily obtained online. Now if you searched the web for TEFL Certification, chances are, you are going to be confused because of so many different kinds of certificates and lots of different information. This article will help you clarify any confusion you may have and will guide you in selecting the proper TEFL Certification you will need.
TEFL: Usually done online, and comes in increments of 40 hours, 70 hours, 100 hours, and 120 hours. There may be other types of TEFL as well, for example, 120-hour IN-Class TEFL, 100 Hour online TEFL with 20 hours of in-class materials, and many more. Generally, either a 100 hour or 120 hour Online TEFL is feasible for most employers. In South Korea, a TEFL is not a requirement to get a work permit, but the popular EPIK and GEPIK(Public school jobs in Korea) will require a 120 Hour Online TEFL at a minimum.
In China, all cities now require a 120 hour online TEFL course in order to get work permit as an ESL Teacher. In additional to this, your TEFL certificate will need to be notarized or authenticated depending on which city you will teach in. Furthermore- some cities in China are fussy about the design of the TEFL Certificate. If you are going to teach in a Tier 1 city, you probably don’t have to worry as long as the TEFL certificate says “120 hours”, but some cities, they want other details on the certificate. Cert TESOL and CELTA are same level English teaching Certification that is accredited by the British Council, and is a level above the basic TEFL. Remember, these certification are not to be confused with Teaching Certificates like PGCE, and these certificates mentioned above will not allow you to work at an International School. These certificates only allow you to get higher pay at Language Training Centers and open doors to be a Teacher Trainer.
