When do they hire teachers to teach English in China?
There are two types of teaching jobs in China. Monday to Friday jobs, and Language Center jobs.
The teaching jobs that have a work schedule from Monday to Friday have two strict start dates in the year. The teaching jobs that have a work schedule on the weekends and three weekdays, with two weekdays off, they will hire all year around. So what does this mean for you? You need to first ask yourself what type of job you want.
Some questions you want to ask yourself before deciding the type of position you want:
* Am I a morning person or a night owl?
If you are a morning person, you probably would hate working weekends and nights. You like to be in bed by 11PM and wake up by 6AM. You usually like to meet friends for dinner and run errands in the early evening. If this is you, then a Monday to Friday job would be suitable for you. If you are a night owl, you probably would hate waking up early. You probably like to sleep around 4AM and love clubbing or just watching Netflix all night long. You run your errands when you get around it. If this is you, then a weekend and night job would be perfect for you.
* Do you like to be in an organization with lots of foreigners, or you don’t mind being the only foreigner at your school?
If you like to be in an organization with lots of foreigners, and lots of English speaking local staff, then a training center job with a weekend work schedule would be perfect for you.
One Training Center that we like to Recommend is Keyword Education.
If you like to be independent or within a smaller number of foreign teachers, then working at a Monday to Friday job would be perfect for you.
* Are you a planner- who sets a long-term plan and stick to it very strictly, or do you like some flexibility with your schedule and plans?
If you want some flexibility for your job, you should go with a teaching position that has flexible hiring dates. For example, a private language training center will be okay with you arriving a month late just in case there was a delay in completing your TEFL, or you needed to put off your preparation by a month for whatever reason. A job that hires only twice a year, which would be September 1st and Mid February will NOT ALLOW you to come a month later to start your job. If you miss mid-point deadlines along the way, you will be cut from the hiring process.
* Are you looking for career advancement with your new teaching position or are you looking for a relaxing teaching job that will allow you to enjoy a longer vacation?
If you are looking for a teaching job that gives you career advancement opportunity, then a position in a private language training center can give you this opportunity. These jobs hire all year round and after teaching ESL, there are many career advancement paths, from Director of Studies jobs to Teacher Trainer, the opportunities are endless. Are you looking for a relaxing job that allows you to have 1-2 months of vacation per year? If this is the case, make sure that you are a morning person and you can meet document preparation deadlines. Only the Monday to Friday positions in China will allow you to take this long of a holiday. Good news is, the number of positions are plentiful.
After going through a quick personality job match test, if you are still a bit unclear which job would be suitable for you, you can always consult with your job placement consultant to assist you. However, please note that our job placement consultants aren’t magicians and cannot make a training center job offer you 2 months holiday, nor convince the Education Bureau to allow you to start your job a month after the designated start date.
So, When do schools hire teachers to teach English in China?
For Adult Language Training Center jobs, Kids Language Training Center jobs, and Private Test Prep Training Centers, schools hire teachers all year around. Teachers will come and go all year round, so you can choose when your desired start date is, and come on over to China. Of course, you cannot just show up when you please, you do have to commit to a start date. If there was a minor delay and you had to delay the start date by a month or so, schools are generally flexible as long as you show all of your midpoint document preparation commitments.
For the following schools, the start date is either September 1st or Mid February right after the Chinese New Years.
* Primary School Teaching Jobs
* Public School ESL Jobs
* Middle/High School Subject Teaching Jobs
* University Positions
